This article aims to analyze the development of the concept of intellectual property, as well as to present the progress achieved in relevant legislation and its significance in contemporary times. Through a historical and bibliographical study, the research delineates the definition of intellectual property based on the Convention that proved the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1967. It is subdivided into industrial property and copyright, which are regulated in Brazil by Laws No. 9,279/1996 and 9,610/1998, respectively. Furthermore, the article addresses the circulation of information in the digital environment and the growth of piracy within this context. It highlights the ease with which information and digital copies can be transmitted, as well as the initiatives aimed at curbing this practice. The text emphasizes the lack of awareness and the normalization of piracy in Brazil, arguing that, despite the legal and ethical challenges, this practice has made certain products accessible to social classes that, previously, would not have had such access.
