THE ROLE OF NURSING IN CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH SYPHILIS IN OLD AGE

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that has become a growing public health challenge, especially among the elderly population, with increased life expectancy and changes in sexual behaviors. Syphilis often goes unnoticed or is underdiagnosed, leading to complications that can seriously affect the quality of life of the elderly, considering the vulnerability of this age group. In this sense, it is essential that nursing plays an active role in the identification, prevention, and management of syphilis, promoting comprehensive care that takes into account the particularities of senile patients. The objective of this article is to describe the nursing process regarding syphilis in the elderly. This is a descriptive literature review. This article highlights the importance of a comprehensive and humanized approach in the care of elderly people with syphilis, where the nurse acts as a facilitator in diagnosis, treatment and monitoring, health promotion and education about syphilis are fundamental for prevention, including emotional and social support to the patient, it is essential that the nurse recognizes the particularities of the elderly population, offering a welcoming and respectful environment that encourages the search for help, contributing to the well-being and quality of life of the elderly.
