Oral health is an important factor in the animal's quality of life. One of the main factors that affect the oral health is the evolution of bacterial plaque, the mineralization of the plaque, which if untreated, may cause problems in vital organs, thus compromising the dog's general health. From this perspective, a central question arises in this study: Why can periodontal disease in its most severe stage predispose to the risk of infectious endocarditis in dogs? Therefore, this research was aimed at analyzing the relationship between severe periodontal disease in dogs and the risk of developing infectious endocarditis, evaluating the importance of oral health care, advances in periodontal disease and identifying effective prophylaxis methods dental treatment against periodontium infection. This work was based on bibliographic research, under thorough analysis of the data obtained in scientific articles, books and websites about the themes. It is observed that the progression of periodontal disease may lead to infectious endocarditis in dogs, and that the performance of prophylactic measures is essential when you want to avoid endocardial infection and its complications.
