Maxillofacial cysts are common lesions that can have a significant impact on the oral and general health of patients, making it essential to investigate their characteristics and treatments. This study aimed to investigate cysts in the maxillofacial region, addressing their characteristics, treatments and preventive measures. The central question that guided the research was: What are the challenges and gaps in the understanding and effectiveness of methods for treating and preventing maxillofacial cysts? To this end, databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and SciELO were analyzed in search of relevant studies. The general objective of this work was to examine the different types of maxillofacial cysts, investigate the available treatment methods and discuss preventive measures. The literature review highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, facilitated by imaging methods and biopsies, for more appropriate treatment selection. Among the therapeutic approaches studied were surgical options, such as enucleation and marsupialization, and non-surgical treatments, such as aspiration and injection of sclerosing substances. Prevention of these cysts involved identifying and controlling risk factors such as trauma, infections and genetic predisposition. The research emphasized the need for oral health education and regular dental follow-up, aiming at early detection and appropriate management of maxillofacial cysts.
