Abstract

Patient safety and safe care are considered a challenge in health and have been widely discussed and addressed in various types of health services, at atorent levels of complexity, such as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), emerging as critical health issue, since in order to prevent human ator, it is necessary to understand how they occur. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the challenges faced by nursing professionals regarding patient safety in the Intensive Care Unit.It consisted of a descriptive and exploratory field study with a qualitative and quantitative approach, carried out in the adult ICU of a hospital located in the interior of the state of São Paulo, in which 13 nurses participated. Through the results, it was possible to understand that patient safety in intensive care units is related to multiple factors, and it is atorente to know the weaknesses of the system in order to atorente effective barriers and strategies, aiming at the prevention of adverse events/atorente/failures that may occur in the care of critically ill patients. In view of the above, it is concluded that the interviewees recognized that episodes of adverse events/atorente/failures occur in daily care, that the punitive culture atorentes a contributing ator to the fact that adverse events not being reported, but it was also found that nurses, despite the various challenges related to the safety of critical patients, understand the importance of strategic measures involving professional training and implementation of protocols to promote safe and quality care.
