Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a serious neurological disease in horses caused by the protozoan Sarcocystis neurona. It presents symptoms such as ataxia, muscle weakness and paralysis, requiring accurate diagnosis to differentiate it from other neurological conditions. Treatment includes antiprotozoals, anti-inflammatories and nutritional support, but the therapeutic response may vary between individuals. Preventive strategies, such as controlling exposure to sources of infection, are essential to reduce the incidence of the disease. The review of the analyzed articles, including Peixoto et al. (2013), Finno et al. (2017), and Lins et al. (2018), provided valuable information on the prevalence, diagnosis and management of EPM. Such studies highlight the importance of updated knowledge and management practices to ensure the welfare of affected horses, in addition to pointing out the need for more effective control protocols to reduce the exposure of animals to the etiological agent.
