Sepsis is a severe condition caused by an uncontrolled response of the body to infections, affecting individuals of all ages. In Brazil, it is responsible for high mortality rates, especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), with over 400,000 cases annually among adults. Key signs of sepsis include fever, tachypnea, hypotension, and tachycardia. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent severe complications such as multiple organ failure and death. This study aims to discuss the early identification of sepsis in long-term hospitalized patients, focusing on signs, symptoms, diagnostic methods, and the epidemiology of the disease. The research was conducted using databases such as SciELO and Google Scholar, with descriptors including sepsis and nursing, and considering publications from the last five years (2019-2024). The critical role of the nursing team in early detection and appropriate management of sepsis is emphasized, highlighting the importance of care protocols and continuous training to reduce mortality and improve patient outcomes.
