The association between gastric reflux and esophageal cancer is uniquely recognized, but its impact is exacerbated by other risk factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, advanced age, obesity, and male gender. The study aims to analyze the incidence of esophageal cancer among patients diagnosed with gastric reflux, using data available in DataSUS, in order to identify whether there is a significant correlation between both conditions. This study uses an exploratory-descriptive research methodology, with a qualitative approach. The study suggests that early intervention and more specific clinical follow-up for patients with GERD, especially those with additional risk factors, can play a fundamental role in the prevention of esophageal cancer. Future longitudinal studies and additional investigations on specific measures to reduce the progression of reflux to cancer may enrich preventive practices, contributing to the reduction of mortality associated with this neoplasia.
