Abstract

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has proven to be essential not only for diagnosis and treatment planning in various dental specialties but also for identifying anomalies unrelated to the original reason for the exam. These conditions, known as incidental findings, include minor bone and dental changes as well as more complex lesions that may require clinical follow-up or additional therapeutic intervention. This article aimed to report on incidental findings observed in small and medium volume cone beam tomographic acquisitions, which are widely used in dental practice. The methodology used for this study was based on a literature review on the subject, covering articles published between 2010 and 2023, selected according to relevance and scientific quality criteria. The results demonstrate that although most findings do not require immediate intervention, early detection and proper follow-up are essential to avoid future complications and efficiently manage the identified conditions. It was concluded that CBCT, in addition to its primary diagnostic application, plays a crucial role in identifying secondary conditions, contributing to more comprehensive and safer patient care.
