Depression, which affects millions of people worldwide, anxiety, aggravated by excessive caffeine consumption, can be intensified in predisposed individuals, causing panic attacks. This research aimed to analyze the effects of coffee consumption as an aggravating factor for anxiety and depression. The study is an exploratory research with a literature review approach. After presenting the chemical composition of coffee, this article seeks to show that caffeine, present in coffee, increases alertness, but excessive consumption can cause insomnia, palpitations and habituation. Although up to 400 mg per day is considered safe, abuse can lead to dependence and withdrawal symptoms, such as headaches and fatigue. Therefore, it is crucial to adopt a balanced approach to caffeine consumption based on individualized measures, mainly genetic predisposition and lifestyle. The scope of the scientific literature reviewed provides evidence of both beneficial claims and harms related to coffee.
