Cystotomy is a widely used surgical technique for removing uroliths in felines. This study reports the case of a 6-year-old Persian cat who presented with hematuria and dysuria. Imaging tests confirmed the presence of urinary stones, and surgical intervention was chosen as treatment. The main objective of this report is to highlight the effectiveness of cystotomy in the management of calcium oxalate urolithiasis, resulting in a favorable outcome.
The technique used, including absorbable monofilament sutures and dorsal bladder incisions, proved to be effective, in line with literature recommendations. Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach, including appropriate medications and dietary adjustments, were essential for the patient's recovery and prevention of relapses. The need for more prospective studies on different surgical techniques and their implications for complications such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) is highlighted, contributing to the improvement of clinical and surgical practice in veterinary medicine.
