CONTROLE E SANÇÃO NA REINTEGRAÇÃO SOCIAL: THE ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGY IN THE PRISON CONTEXT

Abstract

It is with great enthusiasm that we present this digital book, which aims to explore and analyze the challenges and opportunities in the field of psychology within the complex context of the Brazilian prison system. Entitled "Controle e Sanção na Reintegração Social: O Papel da Psicologia no Contexto Prisional", this work is dedicated to understanding the fundamental role of psychology in the social reintegração of individuals who pass through the prison system.

Chapter 1, "The role of the prison system", offers a perspective on the role of the prison system, highlighting how Foucault's ideas in "Vigiar e Punir" show the transition from physical punishment to a system focused on ressocialization, but one that faces great challenges. Despite legislation and agreements, we recommend social reintegration, the Brazilian reality still suffers from over-lot, precarious conditions and a lack of effective public policies. The reintegration of ex-detainees into a difficult society, and the absence of opportunities contributes to criminal recidivism. Education and work within prisons are seen as fundamental to promote effective reintegration.

In Chapter 2, entitled "O Papel da Psicologia no Sistema prisional", we will explore how psychology and the penal system historically reinforced practices of control and exclusion of individuals considered deviant. Both will emerge as ways to shape behavior, diagnosing disorders based on criteria such as periculosity. The author suggests that, instead of legitimizing exclusões, Psicologia should adopt a critical stance in prisons, promoting interventions that address the sufferings of incarcerated people and rethink the concept of justice for a more inclusive society.

No Chapter 3, “The role of the Psychologist in the Brazilian Prison System” The text highlights the atuação do psychologist in prisons, formalized after the Law of Penal Execution of 1984, as fundamental for the ressocialization of the apenados. The psychologist seeks to promote the psychoemotional balance of prisoners, focusing on their social reintegration and not punishment. Profissão is closely linked to public policies and human rights, defending a humanized approach to the recovery of detainees. Psychological intervention is not only about individual changes, but also about the benefits of the prison system itself, promoting dignity and citizenship to those incarcerated.

At the end of this work, we hope that readers develop a deep understanding of the challenges and possibilities that psychology faces in the Brazilian prison context. Our objective is to inspire reflections and actions that contribute to the construction of a more fair, humane and efficient system, promoting effective social transformations.
