The study addresses non-pharmacological strategies for the control of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), emphasizing the importance of alternatives to drug treatment, especially for patients who have contraindications to prolonged use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or prefer natural methods. The objective is to review the main lifestyle interventions, such as dietary modifications, weight control, elevation of the head of the bed, smoking cessation and reduction of alcohol consumption, evaluating their effectiveness in reducing GERD symptoms. The methodology consists of a literature review, based on randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses and international guidelines published in the last five years. The results indicate that weight loss and elevation of the head of the bed are the most effective interventions in reducing reflux symptoms, while dietary modifications, such as avoiding large meals and trigger foods, also play an important role. Smoking cessation and moderation in alcohol consumption were associated with smaller but significant improvements. It is concluded that non-pharmacological strategies are essential in the management of GERD, both alone and in combination with drug therapies, providing improvements in symptoms and quality of life of patients, in addition to reducing the need for prolonged pharmacological interventions.
