This article presents an analysis of the work Captains of the Sands by Jorge Amado, author of several works. The aforementioned work reveals the daily reality of the city of Salvador in Bahia. The author seeks to raise awareness in the reader by drawing attention to the problems that many people suffer from, and in this work the issue of a group of young people belonging to the less privileged class who do everything to survive is addressed. The analysis of the work involves reading the book, articles, and research on websites. The objective of this article is to analyze the work by associating it with the daily lives of many young people who live in a similar situation to the young people who make up the Captains of the Sands group. It is known that the situation of the young people portrayed in the work is still present today, the situation of young people who live on the streets because they have nowhere to live and that this situation is linked to several factors that are becoming common in Brazilian society. In addition to the analysis of the work, a little about the life of the author is also presented, who is considered a great writer who has managed to win over many readers with his works, each one focused on problems that involve human life. Throughout the article, the parts that make up the work will be addressed, such as the setting where the story takes place, the characters, the plot, the conflicts, the moments of tranquility and the various ways the characters find to get out of certain situations. Reading articles contributed greatly to developing the article, along with reading the book Captains of the Sands, a work that, among many others by Machado de Assis, stood out for the plot developed by the characters created by the author.
