The media exerts a significant influence on public perceptions of safety, shaping the way society views crime and violence. Frequent exposure to sensationalist news about crimes can create an exacerbated feeling of insecurity, which does not always reflect the reality of crime data. This distortion of perception can lead to pressure for stricter public policies and a negative view of security institutions. Furthermore, media coverage tends to reinforce stereotypes and prejudices, contributing to the stigmatization of certain social groups. Lack of a balanced and informed approach to addressing security issues can result in a more polarized and anxious society. By reviewing the literature on the topic, this study explores the social impacts of this dynamic, identifying how the media can both contribute to greater awareness of public security challenges and a distorted and alarmist perception of reality. The importance of responsible and ethical coverage is highlighted, which balances the need to inform with the responsibility of not inciting fear or reinforcing mistaken views about public safety.
