Objective: Evaluate epidemiological data related to osteomyelitis in the Unified Health System in Minas Gerais for a period of 5 years. Method: Retrospective cohort, analyzing electronic and electronic medical records of patients hospitalized by the SUS, in the Brazilian states, from January 2019 to December 2023, diagnosed with osteomyelitis and recorded in the DATASUS electronic form with the information available in TABNET. For the development and theoretical discussion of the data, scientific articles and bibliographies published on the topic “osteomyelitis” were used. The searches were carried out in the SCIELO and PubMed databases using the descriptors “osteomyelitis”, “Etiology of osteomyelitis”, “mortality of osteomyelitis” and “Epidemiology of osteomyelitis”. Results: A total of 9631 hospital admissions were recorded, the majority of admissions were concentrated in the age group of 20 to 59 years, representing 62.4% of the total. Men were more frequently hospitalized, accounting for 70.7% of cases. There were 138 deaths due to osteomyelitis, representing 1.43% of hospitalizations, being more common in people over 60 years of age, which accounted for 1.14% of hospitalizations. Conclusion: Osteomyelitis is one of the biggest orthopedic and orthopedic challenges in the country, requiring greater investments in the study, treatment and, mainly, prevention of this pathology.
