This literature review gathered articles published preferably in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese in the last five years in the PUBMED and SciELO databases, aiming to review the main risk factors related to the development of pyelonephritis. The selection of the bibliography used to prepare this article also included excerpts from important books in medicine, a step that helped to better define and conceptualize terms relevant to the study. Pyelonephritis is a potentially serious condition that requires careful attention to the underlying risk factors. Proper management of these conditions can not only prevent pyelonephritis, but also significantly reduce the complications associated with the disease. Early identification and effective treatment of predisposing factors are essential to improve clinical outcomes and prevent progression to permanent kidney damage or sepsis. In clinical practice, it is essential that health professionals are aware of the risk factors described and implement appropriate preventive measures to reduce the incidence and severity of pyelonephritis.
