Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects the renal function of domestic cats, which is essential for homeostasis and basic acid balance. Thus, this bibliographic review highlights its relevance in veterinary practice due to the high prevalence and impact on the health of cats. With the increase in the feline population and the increasing incidence of kidney diseases, understanding the anatomy and renal physiology is crucial for the effective management of CKD. The review details the renal functions, the stages of the disease according to the IRIS (International Renal Interest Society), and the methods of diagnosis, including biomarkers such as creatinine, urea and symmetrical dimethylarginine (SDMA). It also explores the challenges in treatment, from fluid therapy and specialized diets to the management of complications such as hypertension and proteinuria. The meticulous approach and the analysis of advances in diagnostic and treatment methods are essential for the improvement of the care and prognosis of cats with CKD.
