Abstract

Introduction: Pulmonary tuberculosis is a severe infection, particularly among smokers. In Brazil, the disease is considered a public health priority. Objectives: To present the epidemiological profile of tuberculosis among smokers in the South region of Brazil, evaluating demographic characteristics and associations with smoking. Methodology: A descriptive, retrospective quantitative study using data from the DATASUS platform regarding patients with tuberculosis and smoking status (2013-2023). Results: Out of 36,651 patients, the majority were male (78.70%), with the highest prevalence of tuberculosis in Rio Grande do Sul (60.48%), followed by Paraná (21.97%) and Santa Catarina (17.55%). Tuberculosis was more common among white individuals and those with low education levels. Most patients recovered, but comorbidities increased the mortality rate. Conclusion: The high prevalence in Rio Grande do Sul and the presence of comorbidities highlight the need for tuberculosis control strategies tailored to the regional and socioeconomic conditions of each state in the South region of Brazil.
