Violence against women is a social phenomenon and a result of gender inequality, which harms the health and well-being of the victim. This article aimed to present the types of violence, characterize psychological violence, and understand the role of psychology professionals in this context. The methodological procedures adopted were bibliographic research with a qualitative and descriptive approach. The importance of the Maria da Penha Law in this process, the effects of psychological violence, and the role of professionals in this area were discussed. The data obtained in this study corroborate the literature on women victims of violence and the services provided by public authorities. The literature indicates that prevention and awareness regarding violence are still the best ways to care for these victims. Thus, the need for improved public policies is highlighted due to the increasing demand for cases. After the research, it was found that psychologists have contributed to the process of denaturalizing and deconstructing violence, despite the complexity and cyclical nature of this change process.
