MORBIMORTALITY OF CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENT CANCER: STUDY OF EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DATA FROM THE MUNICIPALITY OF CASCAVEL, PARANÁ

Abstract

The analysis of the epidemiological profile of childhood and adolescent cancer morbidity and mortality in Cascavel, Paraná, from 2019 to September 2023, revealed important trends and patterns. Data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS), accessed through the Department of Informatics of SUS (DATASUS), were used. The age group of 15 to 19 years had the highest percentage of hospitalizations, suggesting the influence of the developmental stage on cancer incidence and detection. There was an overall reduction in hospitalizations in 2022 and 2023, possibly reflecting advances in treatments and public health policies. The age group of 5 to 9 years was the most affected by mortality, with a predominance of deaths among boys, except in the 15 to 19-year age group, where the distribution was balanced. Mortality rates varied over the years, peaking in 2021 for those under 1 year old and subsequently decreasing. The study emphasizes the importance of early detection and timely treatment to improve survival rates, recommending public health strategies that include education and awareness for parents and caregivers, continuous training for health professionals, and policies ensuring quick and equitable access to specialized treatments. Continuous data collection and analysis are essential to improve these strategies and outcomes for children and adolescents with cancer.
