The improper disposal of medicines in Brazil is a significant problem, affecting both the environment and public health. The lack of guidance and awareness among the population contributes to this worrying situation. The National Solid Waste Policy establishes important guidelines, but the lack of information and the culture of self-medication result in inadequate disposal, both in homes and in health facilities.Awareness of the harms of improper disposal and the right methods is crucial. Awareness campaigns, instructions on drug labels, and take-back programs can promote safer and more sustainable practices. The role of pharmacists is vital as they must guide patients. However, they need proper training and access to up-to-date information.Environmental education from childhood to higher education is essential to sensitize the population. These actions aim to reduce the negative impacts of improper disposal and promote a culture of responsible and sustainable use of medicines.
