Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, demyelinating disease of the Central Nervous System. Cognitive impairment is a sign that is sometimes overlooked, but has a great impact on the instrumental activities of the affected patient's daily life. The prevalence of cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis varies across the lifespan and may be difficult to distinguish from other causes in older age. MRI studies show that widespread changes in brain networks contribute to cognitive dysfunction, with gray matter atrophy being an early sign of future cognitive decline.
