Abstract

Objective: To analyze the prevalence of cases of congenital syphilis in Cascavel-Pr, highlighting the role of this disease as a traditional sentinel event in Primary Health Care, as its occurrence suggests failures in the functioning of prenatal care. Material and Method: Descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, carried out retrospectively, through the analysis of publicly available data in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) for cases of congenital syphilis in the municipality of Cascavel-Pr, in 2015 to 2022. Results: During this period, 195,872 cases of congenital syphilis were reported in Brazil, 6,517 cases in Paraná and 200 cases in Cascavel-Pr, with 105 (52.5%) of the newborns being female, of white mothers 156 (78 %). The majority of cases were reported to mothers aged between 20-24 years old 83 (41.5%), with completed high school 50 (25%). The diagnosis of maternal syphilis was basically established during the pregnant woman's prenatal care 138 (69%) or at the time of delivery/curettage 50 (25%) and of these, 179 (89.5%) underwent prenatal care, in relation to treatment of partners, it was found that 132 (66%) did not receive treatment. Most congenital syphilis diagnoses 193 (96.5%) were made up to the sixth day of the newborn's life. It was also found that there were 172 (86%) cases of recent syphilis, and regarding the evolution, 5 (2.5%) deaths were reported. Conclusion: The results reveal some weak points in the prevention of congenital syphilis in the city of Cascavel-Pr, demonstrating the need for improvements in prenatal care for this population with urgency to implement educational strategies, facilitated access to health care and reinforcement of screening and treatment of partnerships.
