Abstract

The use of contraceptives has been widespread for more than six decades and was a very important milestone in women's history, with this drug increasingly taking its place, but they offer various risks to women's health. The weight of the matter is based on a lack of information, which can lead to various health problems. The purpose of this study was therefore to highlight the risks and benefits related to the use of contraceptives, as well as to emphasize the importance of advice from a health professional when choosing a contraceptive method. To this end, scientific articles from the BVS (Virtual Health Library), MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online), ScienceDirect and Google Scholar databases were used. This analysis took place through a literature review and the time period consisted of research carried out between 2019 and 2024, totaling 15 selected articles. It was found that the use of hormonal contraceptives can lead to low libido, acne, increased blood pressure, weight gain, DVT, among others. It is also clear that it is important to focus on this issue so that the correct information is passed on, as well as the value of proper guidance.
