Abstract

Psittacines, birds widely found throughout the Brazilian territory, unfortunately are frequently targeted by illegal animal trafficking, which jeopardizes their health and well-being. In this context, in-depth investigation into the therapeutic properties of medicinal plants offers hope for finding more effective and less aggressive solutions for the treatment of psittacine clamidiosis. The main objective of this current research is to explore the potential of medicinal plants and their pharmacological properties as a viable alternative in the treatment of clamidiosis in birds. The primary psittacine birds commonly found in captivity include Maritaca (Psittacara leucophthalmus), Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva), Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), and Lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis/Agapornis fischeri). Understanding the actions of plants enriches the catalog of treatments for various diseases, as it is well known that birds are more sensitive animals, requiring elevated care in the management of diseases in this class.
