This article addresses Petrobrás' legal obligations and challenges in implementing sustainable development as a means of preserving the environment. The general objective of this article is to: Show the importance, challenges and legal obligations to apply sustainable development while respecting the national environmental policy in Brazil. Specifically, it has the following objectives: Briefly analyze the sustainable development adopted by companies; Identify challenges and legal obligations that must be observed to apply sustainable development in companies and; Contextualize how the company Petróbras incorporates sustainable development into the organization's internal and external processes. The methodology was based on bibliographical research, in which the following authors were used: Forbes (2023), Freitas (2022), Sarlet and Marinoni (2022) and so on. Therefore, it noted that the responsibility of companies in relation to the environment is not limited only to compliance with legal obligations, but also involves an ethical and responsible stance in relation to the environmental impacts of their activities.
