Abstract

Animal Law is a field of law that seeks to recognize and protect the rights of animals, considering their capacity for suffering and their intrinsic importance. In the specific context of wildlife trafficking in the Brazilian Amazon, criminal liability plays a crucial role in reducing this problem. Brazil has comprehensive environmental legislation that prohibits the trafficking of wild animals. However, supervision and enforcement of the law are often insufficient to contain this illegal practice. Wildlife trafficking in the Amazon is a particular concern due to the region's rich biodiversity and international demand for exotic species. Imposing severe criminal sanctions on those involved in wildlife trafficking can play a significant role in reducing this criminal activity. Harsher and more effective penalties can deter criminals, acting as a deterrent to those seeking to profit from the illegal exploitation of Amazonian wildlife. It is essential that there is cooperation between local, state and federal authorities to investigate and prosecute those involved in the wildlife trafficking. Furthermore, law enforcement must be accompanied by efforts to dismantle trafficking networks and identify the main perpetrators behind this illegal activity. In addition to punitive measures, it is essential to invest in public awareness and education programs about the negative impacts of wildlife trafficking. This can help create a culture of respect and protection for Amazonian fauna, reducing the demand for exotic species as pets. Given the transnational nature of wildlife trafficking, international cooperation is essential to effectively combat this practice. Brazil must work together with other countries, especially those that are final destinations for trafficked species, to strengthen laws and enforcement mechanisms related to the illegal trade in wild animals. In summary, criminal liability plays a crucial role in reducing wildlife trafficking in the Brazilian Amazon. Imposing stricter sanctions, along with law enforcement efforts, public awareness and international cooperation, can help protect the region's rich biodiversity and ensure the welfare of wild animals.
