Patient safety in general anesthesia is a crucial concern for healthcare professionals, aiming to reduce perioperative complications. This review integrates existing literature on strategies to minimize risks during the perioperative period. Preoperative optimization, such as treatment of comorbidities, has been shown to reduce complications. The use of standardized safety checklists has been effective in preventing errors during the procedure. Prophylactic administration of antibiotics reduces the risk of postoperative infections, although rational use is crucial to avoid bacterial resistance. The "time out" strategy before surgery has been shown to be effective in preventing surgical errors. Other interventions, such as perioperative monitoring of body temperature and optimization of multimodal analgesia, also contribute to patient safety. In conclusion, a multidisciplinary approach that includes preoperative optimization, the use of checklists, rational antibiotic administration, and error prevention strategies is essential to improve patient safety in general anesthesia.
