This study addressed the challenge of adapting pedagogical practices to contemporary educational needs, focusing on the active methodology of peer instruction in higher education. The general objective was to investigate the implementation of this methodology, emphasizing its potential to promote collaborative learning environments enriched by digital technologies, such as augmented and virtual reality. Through a comprehensive literature review, this work examined how peer instruction can improve the quality of learning by encouraging interaction, engagement, and the development of critical skills among students. The results highlighted that, despite the challenges in adopting this approach, the benefits to the learning process were evident, including increased conceptual understanding and the development of essential skills. Final considerations reinforced the importance of investments in teacher training and technological infrastructure to facilitate the transition to active teaching methodologies, such as peer-to-peer instruction, in higher education institutions.
