Endodontics seeks to preserve the tooth through prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and control of alterations to the pulp and periradicular tissues. Conventionally, endodontic therapy is carried out in multiple sessions, but there has been increasing innovation and the introduction of single-session endodontic treatment into everyday clinical practice. These approaches have been much debated among endodontists, with a view to treatment efficiency, biological efficiency, comfort, satisfaction and the preferences of the patient and the dental surgeon. The aim of this study is to present a comparative analysis of endodontic treatment carried out in multiple sessions and single sessions. To this end, articles were located in the electronic databases: Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), and PUBMED, using the descriptors: "endodontics", "root canal treatment", "single session", "multiple session" and their English variants, including articles published in Portuguese and English, from the period 2018 to 2023 that addressed the topic of endodontic treatment in single or multiple sessions, the benefits and risks of the procedures performed and parameters of success rate and postoperative complications in both techniques. A total of 155 articles were found, and 17 were selected as the most relevant, reliable and applicable to the proposed question. It was concluded that both treatment techniques have advantages and disadvantages, and that the choice of the best procedure should be based on clinical conditions, treatment objectives and the patient's needs.
