Introduction: Punica granatum L. is also popularly known in Brazil as a pomegranate, is a woody shrub belonging to the family Punicaceae. Objective: To demonstrate the pharmacological properties of Punica granatum L. and its use in the development of new herbal products and food products. Methodology: Bibliographic review of scientific articles in a database Google Scholar, Scielo. Literature review: Tannins are polyphenols that complex with macromolecules, have anti-inflammatory activity, sequester free radicals, improve blood circulation, conferring antioxidant action. Flavonoids have an anti-inflammatory action because they inhibit COX2, the main route of inflammation. Final Thoughts: Pomegranate has anti- inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal and antineoplastic properties as pharmacological properties. Medicines and herbal products based on pomegranates can be developed capsules and sachets of effervescent salts, ointments and local anesthetics, as well as sprays.
