Abstract

The theme of this article aims to discuss the influence of psychological factors on criminal recidivism. The general objective is to describe the main factors that caused criminal recidivism in Brazil, briefly discussing the history of criminal recidivism in Brazil and the prison system, presenting the legal aspects regarding the criminal legal system and also problems present in the system. prison. The problem that guides the research is: what are the social factors identified as main causes of criminal recidivism in Brazilian prisons? And, finally, what has been suggested as a “probable” solution to this much-debated problem? A bibliographical research is used and the deductive approach method is used as a technique. The results show that recidivism has several causative factors, including family abandonment, more prison conditions, lack of education, low income, early involvement with drugs, and society's lack of preparation to receive and offer opportunities, and that there are solutions such as, screening prisoners upon arrival at penitentiaries, providing support so that a family can provide support, and also improving coexistence with prison officers.
