The present work is the result of bibliographical research, which aims to understand the limits and possibilities that school education can contribute to psychic development and provide the formation of a critical and reflective subject. To this end, it was necessary to carry out a study on human development based on Historical-critical Pedagogy and Historical-cultural Psychology. Historical-cultural Psychology and Historical-critical Pedagogy present the fundamental role of the school in the process of social development of individuals, as it is responsible for socializing knowledge systematized over time. However, the school will have to identify and select historically accumulated knowledge that is essential to the development of subjects, the so-called classical knowledge. With the results of the research, it was possible to realize that the human being is a social being that becomes human through the appropriation of historically accumulated knowledge. The school is a specific space for transmitting this knowledge to new generations, thus contributing to the development of the human psyche.
