Changes in maternal physiology are common during pregnancy, a fact that can lead to dysregulation of the thyroid axis, leading to hyperthyroidism during pregnancy, which can clinically manifest as subclinical hyperthyroidism, thyrotoxicosis and thyrotoxic crisis. Signs and symptoms such as weight loss, sweating, anxiety, tachycardia, high blood pressure and increased thyroid volume may be associated with this condition, however, the diagnosis is given by measuring serum TSH and T4L levels, which would be found to be altered. . The drug treatment of hyperthyroidism involves the use of propylthiouracil (PTU) and methimazole (MMZ), with the first drug being the choice for the first trimester. After this period, it must be replaced by MMZ. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to avoid complications.
