In Brazil, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) has led to many deaths due to a lack of professional training. In this context, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the lives of the world's population, prompting a search for in-depth knowledge in this area. Objective: to highlight the main nursing care provided to patients affected by ARDS, as well as to describe the therapeutic strategies used to improve respiratory discomfort. The study's guiding question is: what contributions does nursing make to patients with ARDS? How do nurses work with ARDS patients on mechanical ventilators? Methodology: This is an integrative review research in the databases: BVS and Google Scholar, articles in Portuguese, published from 2019 to 2024. The following descriptors were used: nursing, patients and ARDS. Results: It was observed that nursing care for ARDS patients is of great value, as there are great possibilities of manifestations of symptoms and complications that can be presented, highlighting the need for a more defined knowledge about clinical signs and clinical condition so that interventions are effective, bringing quality of life, promoting and preventing complications to patients' health. Finally, this syndrome is associated with COVID-19 because it is a recent phenomenon and there are not many studies that address a more delineated intervention on this subject. Conclusion: It is extremely important to highlight this reality and look for strategies to improve the working conditions of the nursing team, as well as expanding continuing education training, thus contributing to providing qualified assistance aimed at unique and comprehensive care for these ARDS patients.
