The aim of this study is to present public policies for former inmates through literature review. The justification demonstrates that besides these post-incarceration policies being punitive, they result in significant social, financial, educational, housing, and health barriers for the reentry and reintegration of prisoners into their communities as productive citizens. Furthermore, these policies have a series of unintended consequences, including diminishing the effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing poverty and homelessness and improving the educational level of the underqualified workforce. The methodology applied for the foundation of this research was exploratory in nature, involving bibliographic research analyzing articles published in indexed journals that address the subject, in specific databases covering the topic of interest.
