Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is recommended up to six months of age, with complementary feeding continuing until two years or more. Human milk provides for the baby's nutritional and immunological needs, containing over 200 components that ensure proper growth and development. However, despite the measures taken, early weaning remains prevalent. This study aims to review the benefits of breastfeeding and suggest strategies to reduce early weaning. We conducted a narrative review using databases like SciELO, Google Scholar, and MEDLINE, filtering publications from the last 5 years in English or Portuguese. EBF until the sixth month reduces the risk of infections, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), allergies, obesity, diabetes, fostering a bond between mother and child. Initiating breastfeeding soon after childbirth is recommended. Complementary feeding begins after 6 months. Educational strategies improve breastfeeding initiation and duration rates. Accurate guidance is crucial for health promotion.
