IMPLICATIONS OF INFIDELITY IN MARRIAGE: CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the implications of infidelity in marriage, specifically in Vila de Viana. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach and exploratory research, with a sample of five randomly selected couples. Participants were interviewed individually, using a semi-structured script, in order to collect information about the causes, consequences, experiences, perceptions and reflections related to infidelity in marriage. The results indicated the causes that contribute to marital infidelity such as emotional dissatisfaction, lack of communication, lack of physical intimacy, the search for novelty or excitement, external opportunities and individual factors, as well as their emotional, social, cultural and economic implications for the couples involved. As for the consequences of infidelity, negative emotional impacts, distrust, marital conflicts and social repercussions highlight the seriousness of infidelity for relationships. This highlights the importance of providing adequate psychological and social support for couples affected by infidelity, whether through couples therapy, support from friends and family or seeking professional help are seen as practical implications for mitigating the phenomenon. Regarding thematic analysis, four most referenced words were highlighted: betrayal with 32, communication with 24, distrust with 16 and finally respect with 7. Based on the discussions and data analysis, conclusions and recommendations are presented to address this problem.
