Abstract

The Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS, acronym in Portuguese), despite the challenges and limitations it faces, is a reference model for public health throughout the world. Among the aspects that have had an impact on this system is the fact that the Brazilian population has been living longer, which means that there are many elderly people. This aging of the population has led to problems for the SUS, such as degenerative joint diseases and/or falls that require, for example, the hip arthroplasty procedure. Given this reality, this study aimed to describe and analyze hospital admissions for hip arthroplasty recorded in the state of Paraná between 2020 and 2022. The information was obtained from the SUS Hospital Information System, separated by the type of care category (elective; emergency or accidents or injuries and poisonings) and by these variables: (i) gender (female or male); (ii) age group (under 60 years; 60-79 years or 80 years or more); and (iii) type of procedure. The results of this investigation revealed that, in the established period, in the state of Paraná, hip arthroplasties generated more than seven thousand hospital admissions, with a predominance of females, an age range of 60-79 years and a prevalence of two procedures: Primary cementless/hybrid total hip arthroplasty and partial hip arthroplasty. These descriptive results are relevant because they can help health systems think of strategies to minimize possible risks to the health of elderly patients, avoiding highly complex procedures.
