Over the centuries, medicine as a whole has undergone a revolution, allowing increasingly sophisticated techniques and devices to be used to treat critically ill patients, significantly reducing mortality rates. This narrative literature review brought together articles from databases (PUBMED and SciELO) with the aim of pointing out the main functions of the anesthesiologist, the intensive care physician and the surgeon within the intensive care unit when caring for an individual admitted there. The search for eligible articles took place during the month of November 2023, with only 65 being chosen for review after a thorough search. It was noticed, at the end of the study, that the intensive care physician coordinates the care of critical patients in a specialized environment for this purpose. It provides medical and clinical assistance by actively monitoring the individual's vital functions, preventing sequelae and damage. In this scenario, the anesthesiologist can help manage the patient's pain and the surgeon can provide surgical assistance when necessary.
