THE IMPORTANCE OF PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY IN THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF DENTAL PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Abstract

The aim of this study is to conduct a literature review on clinical, scientific, and management approaches that can be used in dental pediatric care for autistic patients in dental clinics. This is a literature review using the descriptors "Pediatric Dentistry," "Autism Spectrum Disorder," and "Oral Health." Databases such as Scielo, PubMed, and BBO were consulted. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied, resulting in the selection of 8 articles for analysis. The studies emphasize the complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the need for a profound understanding to guide effective interventions. Pediatric dentistry plays a crucial role, requiring a sensitive and adaptable approach. The lack of parents' knowledge about oral health in children with ASD is evident, highlighting the need for education. Interprofessional collaborations, especially with Occupational Therapists, are essential. Pediatric dentistry plays a fundamental role in preventing and treating dental problems in children with ASD, providing care tailored to their specific needs. The personalized approach contributes to the prevention of oral issues and promotes oral hygiene habits.
