Proper oral hygiene is vital for health, including the removal of bacterial plaque, tongue cleaning, and the use of antiseptics. The nursing team plays a crucial role in preventing complications and promoting oral health. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to understand the multidisciplinary team in the Intensive Care Unit regarding the implementation of oral hygiene in critical patients. METHODS: This exploratory and descriptive study with a quantitative approach employed questionnaires to assess 36 healthcare professionals in a multidisciplinary team from an Intensive Care Unit in a Philanthropic Hospital in Western Paraná. RESULTS: Regarding the knowledge of the nursing team regarding the importance of oral hygiene, 72.97% believe that nursing professionals have adequate knowledge to perform oral hygiene, with only 10.81% disagreeing. Regarding the recommended frequency of oral hygiene, 77.78% of Intensive Care professionals perceive a lack of emphasis and regularity, indicating a challenge in providing adequate attention within the ICU. CONCLUSION: Oral hygiene in the ICU is essential but underestimated compared to other practices. There is a need for greater emphasis to increase awareness of its importance in the routine of intensive care.
