OVERCROWDING OF THE BRAZILIAN PENITENTIARY SYSTEM AND ITS CONSEQUENCES

Abstract

Overcrowding in the Brazilian penitentiary system is a problem of a complex nature that is currently in evidence and is widely covered in the mainstream media and scientific literature. Although many diagnoses of the problems are made in the print, television and digital media, as well as in the scientific literature, little is discussed about possible solutions to such problems. The objective of this work is to analyze the growth of the Brazilian prison population, its consequences and discuss possible solutions to such problems. The methodology used was the analysis of scientific articles found in internet searches. The proposed and discussed solutions were divided into short, medium and long term, varying in their degree of complexity. The penitentiary system needs urgent structural reforms that must be carried out as soon as possible in order to resolve the chaos. Only with a change in the mentality of our governments can these solutions be implemented.
