This study addresses the issue of gender inequality in the prison system, which is an extremely relevant subject for understanding the transparency of rights and discrimination that exists within penal institutions. Over the past few years, there has been a growing increase in the number of women incarcerated around the world. However, gender inequality in this context is an aspect that deserves to be highlighted, as living conditions, public policies and legislation itself are often based on models and practices that aim exclusively to meet the needs of men. In this sense, the research seeks to analyze the repercussions of this inequality in the prison system, considering both the structural aspects and the social and cultural dynamics that permeate penal institutions. One of the main issues highlighted in the article refers to gender-based violence experienced by women in the prison environment. The study also discusses gender differences in work and educational opportunities within the prison system. Women are often retrenched from vocational and educational training programs, which limits their prospects for social reintegration upon release. By recognizing and transforming the gender inequalities present in the prison environment, it is possible to promote a more just and egalitarian society. Therefore, it is concluded that it is essential to develop policies and practices that consider the specificities of gender in the prison system, guaranteeing access to basic rights, combating violence and opportunities for social reintegration for incarcerated women. Only in this way will it be possible to build a more fair and equal prison system for everyone.
