INTERNAL DENTAL WHITENING FOR ENDODONTICALLY TREATED TEETH: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

The smile is one of the factors that causes the most aesthetic dissatisfaction, as changes in the color of these dental elements, especially in the front teeth, are responsible for damaging the harmony of the smile, leading to a decrease in patients' well-being and self-esteem. Dental darkening is a challenge found in endodontically treated teeth and causes a lot of dissatisfaction, but it can be resolved through internal whitening treatment, which is one of the most requested aesthetic procedures within dentistry. Internal whitening is a procedure performed in the pulp chamber on endodontically treated elements, which aims to whiten teeth that have undergone chromatic changes in the dental crown. The objective of this work was to carry out a literature review on internal whitening in endodontically treated teeth, addressing the advantages and disadvantages of internal tooth whitening, its indications and contraindications, also addressing the etiology of tooth darkening, bleaching techniques and agents used, in addition to the importance of performing the cervical barrier in the treatment. A bibliographical survey was carried out through an automatic online search in the Google Scholar, Pub Med, and Scielo databases, using the keywords “internal dental whitening”, “endodontic teeth whitening”, with articles published between the years of 2013 to 2023, with language restrictions of Portuguese, English and Spanish.
