Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease. Of unknown etiology, genetic and environmental factors are added to its prevalence. The disease presents several clinical manifestations, which ends up delaying the definitive diagnosis and the introduction of correct treatment. Clinical manifestations present with outbreaks interspersed with periods of remission. In Brazil, the estimate is 10 new cases for every 150,000 people, being more common in women aged between 15 and 50 years. Its diagnosis is based on clinical evaluation and laboratory tests, with the purpose of verifying tissue and functional changes resulting from the inflammatory process, in addition to tests that confirm the presence of autoantibodies. Treatment will depend on the intensity and functional and physiological damage to the patient, aiming to establish the immune system and control the symptoms presented. The objective of this work was to describe, through a literature review, the pathophysiology and main methods of diagnosis and treatment of Lupus.
