Midwifery plays a central role in maternal and newborn health, with the aim of providing a safe and satisfactory experience of pregnancy and birth. This literature review explores recent developments in obstetrics, highlighting technological advances, evidence-based practices, the humanization of childbirth and its impact on maternal and neonatal health. The application of prenatal monitoring technologies, such as 3D/4D ultrasounds and advanced imaging exams, offers improved detailing of fetal anatomy, contributing to the early detection of anomalies. Furthermore, telemedicine and remote monitoring are emerging as promising approaches for monitoring high-risk pregnancies, improving access to prenatal care. Evidence-based medicine plays a crucial role in promoting safe and effective obstetric practices by updating clinical guidelines and protocols based on recent research. The humanization of childbirth values the pregnant woman's autonomy and individualized experience, promoting models of childbirth care centered on the woman's choice. The results of this review indicate that effective implementation of these recent developments is associated with a reduction in maternal and neonatal complications, improving the quality of prenatal and perinatal care. This study highlights the continued importance of research, infrastructure investment, and interdisciplinary collaboration to promote a safe, satisfying, and woman-centered experience of pregnancy and birth. Recent developments in obstetrics have the potential to positively transform the maternal and newborn health landscape by providing personalized, evidence-based, pregnant-centered care while ensuring safety and quality of care.
