Abstract

Pharmacists have been part of the public system since the merger of the Unified Health System (SUS). The Hospital Pharmacy (FH) is a clinical, nursing, technical and administrative department responsible for activities related to medication assistance. The objective of this article is to discuss the concepts and historical aspects of Assistance as an integral part of the primary health care system, also including an analysis of the role of pharmaceutical professionals within the scope of the Unified Health System (SUS). The role of the pharmacist in the management of hospital pharmacy has important responsibilities both in the care cycle and in clinical and multidisciplinary activities. In pharmaceutical assistance (FA), pharmaceutical professionals, together with multidisciplinary teams, carry out important activities under the guidance of pharmaceutical services, aiming not only to improve the user's quality of life, but also to achieve a humanized and contextualized practice. Therefore, the methodology used was a bibliographic survey using the following descriptors: Medication Assistance, SUS, Medication Care, SCIELO (Online Scientific Electronic Library), LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences). It also includes relevant content for books, legislation, newsletters and monographs from 2019 to 2023. Pharmacological assistance therefore covers a series of patient-specific activities, for which medicines are the basic input. Prominent among these activities is the promotion of research, development and production of medicines, as well as the selection, planning, acquisition, distribution of medicines and the evaluation of their use to achieve concrete results and improve quality of life. When the SUS is included in this field, it becomes clear that throughout history pharmaceutical assistance has existed as an adjunct to the actions and provision of health services. In recent years, however, the management of the SUS has become increasingly important, as managers have become aware of the growing demands for resources allocated to the acquisition of medicines and the relationship with the quality of health services. Therefore, the management of pharmaceutical services in the SUS is summarized in the activities of the Pharmaceutical Assistance cycle and emphasizes that pharmacists are primarily responsible for ensuring their suitability through the use of techniques such as cost minimization, cost-utility analysis, cost- effectiveness and cost-effectiveness, explain and reiterate the presence and relevance of pharmacoeconomics throughout the process.
