Abstract

Maintaining skin hydration has been an important goal for both men and women to preserve a youthful, healthy and radiant appearance. The hydration process occurs both by natural mechanisms of the organism and by water intake. One of the crucial aspects of skin hydration is the transport of water from deeper layers, such as the dermis, to the epidermis, this process being facilitated by protein channels present in keratinocytes. Aquaporins 3 are specific protein channels responsible for transporting water through the layers of the skin, located in the plasmatic membrane of keratinocytes. The aim of this study was to carry out a literature review on the influence of aquaporins 3 on the skin hydration process. To achieve this objective, a study was carried out based on scientific articles published from 2010 onwards, using the electronic databases PubMed and Google Scholar. Original and review articles related to the topic of aquaporins were consulted. The literature review revealed that the discovery of aquaporin 3 channels brought important contributions to the understanding of the mechanisms involved in skin hydration, promoting a healthy appearance through the transport of water mediated by these channels. In addition, there was a significant advance in cosmetic technology, with the need to develop active principles that act in the maintenance of these channels, increasing their expression and activity in the cell membrane, thus restoring skin hydration and revitalizing it. It was concluded that aquaporins 3 play a significant role in skin hydration, but it is necessary to use actives that favor their presence in skin cells, thus improving hydration, especially in cases of skin aging.
